Meet our new Area Managers
In preparation for another busy year, we have added some new faces to our team.
Indy Wallace (pictured left)
Indy is the Pippa’s Guardians Area Manager for London and surrounding areas.
Indy’s children have all been educated in independent schools and she understands the system extremely well. Indy’s eldest son is studying medicine, her daughter is studying A Levels and her youngest son is at senior school. As a mother, she has the skills and knowledge to support and empathise with international parents.
Indy has had an international upbringing and successful career in business development, sales and account management in Publishing, Exhibitions and Energy efficiency. More recently Indy has been working with children in an independent school as an exam invigilator. She is very aware of the support children require to thrive and make the most of all the opportunities available to them at boarding school. She will be on hand to guide and care for your child throughout their time in the UK and be there for any challenges they may face.
Courtenay Forde-Johnston (pictured right)
Courtenay is the Pippa’s Guardians Area Manager for North Wales and lives close by to the schools that she works with. She is mother to 3 children who have all been educated at prestigious English boarding schools and understands the system extremely well.
Prior to joining Pippa’s Guardians, Courtenay worked in an administrative role in a boarding school where she built excellent relationships with parents and students, fully appreciating the importance of reassurance and good communication. Courtenay is very aware of the support children require to thrive and make the most of all the opportunities available to them at boarding school. She will be on hand to guide and care for your child throughout their time in the UK and be there for any challenges they may face.
Charlie Lloyd (pictured centre)
Charlie is the Pippa’s Guardians Area Manager for Bath and Bristol and lives in a village close to Bath with her husband and daughter who attends a local independent boarding school. Charlie has worked in a variety of people-focused roles and brings a breadth of experience to Pippa’s Guardians. With a background in recruitment, Charlie has worked more recently with families. This has been in the healthcare sector, and with a charity supporting families. She also has a wealth of experience from being a host family.
We are very happy to have them as part of the Pippa’s team. Having recently completed their inductions, they will be out meeting their schools, students and parents along side their Pippa’s colleagues.
Being a host family is incredibly rewarding
Anne Weir is a host family for international students in the UK.
“Both of my children went to an international school in Germany, and my daughter was at a boarding school for a number of years. I remember how hard it was for international children, whose families lived far away, to travel home and back for exeat weekends and shorter holidays and it is even tougher now since the pandemic.
It was important to me that international students have a place to go, where they feel safe and able to relax. I live alone in our family home with a beautiful garden in a quiet and rural location in Worcestershire and I felt I could offer these children a place where they could recharge their batteries and be themselves on their school break. I therefore contacted Pippa’s Guardians and became one of their host families for students studying at schools close to my home.
Pippa’s Guardians looks after hundreds of international students, aged 8 to 18, who study at UK boarding schools in the UK. As part of their guardianship service, they find students suitable families to stay with if they are unable to return home for their holidays. They usually try to match the students to families with similar interests, hobbies or personalities.
The aspect I enjoy most are getting to know the children and slowly building a trusting relationship with them. Some of the children can initially be quite reserved and on their best behaviour, but I find it incredibly rewarding when they feel more at home and their personalities start to shine through.
Most recently, I hosted a girl from Singapore, she was a delight to have stay here, she was polite and helpful and a real pleasure to have around. She worked hard on her school work and was very focussed on her revision and the practical work she did for her food technology course. She even cooked us a three course meal as part of her school work which was a great success.
I have been hosting since 2019 and don’t hesitate to recommend being a host for Pippa’s Guardians.”

A message from Pippa's University Advisor
This year we have had more students than ever apply to study at Oxford and Cambridge – thirteen in total, all of whom were invited to interview in December, so we spent lots of time preparing for those. Practicing interview questions and encouraging students to showcase their intellectual flexibility meant that our students knew what to expect at interview and how to present the best versions of themselves. I’m incredibly proud of them all!
I have also been lucky to support some very creative students this year, hoping to study Architecture, Fine Art and Music. Assembling portfolios of their best work and helping them speak about their creative process in their personal statements has been very rewarding and I am sure they will all go on to flourish at university where they can express themselves.
It’s been an extra challenging year, with more applications than ever because of deferred entry from last year and the UK’s increasingly competitive university system, so helping students to write personal statements that really stand out and are memorable has been my priority. Thankfully our wonderful students are always ready to go the extra mile when it comes to reading and getting the experience they need! I feel very fortunate to have worked with such a fantastic group this year!

May Chan (香港学生家长)

Pippa's Christmas Camp 2021
As Christmas 2021 approached, many students found themselves in a similar situation to Christmas 2020; unable to travel home and be with their families.
Those who could travel, were faced with long and expensive periods of quarantine which made going home impossible.
Following the success of our 2020 Christmas camp and numerous requests from our students and parents, we offered students a Christmas camp at Dean Close School in Cheltenham.
Students aged 11-18 from across the country were welcomed to the camp which offered a blend of study for their upcoming mock examinations, as well as lots of exciting and enjoyable activities which included rock climbing, kayaking, pottery painting, music, sports and social events.
Our dedicated staff worked hard throughout the camp to ensure students were safe, supported and well cared for during their stay. We also wanted to share an English Christmas experience and lots of festive spirit.
We arranged our own Pippa’s Christmas service in the school Chapel which featured festive carols and readings from students who bravely volunteered. We were able to film these readings and share them with their families back home so parents could also feel involved.
All of our students decorated their own Christmas stockings for the camp elves to fill on Christmas eve and students took part in a ‘secret santa’ giving and receiving gifts to and from their campmates. We had a wonderful Christmas three course lunch followed by more carols, games and festive films on Christmas day.
As the number of cases of Covid increased in the UK, we inevitably had a small number of students test positive at the camp. To ensure all students were fit and well to return to school at the end of their Christmas break, we had carefully prepared contingency plans which we swiftly implemented that enabled us to prevent the spread of the virus. It was pleasing to hear how supportive and reassured our parents were of the action that we took.
We have had kind and appreciative feedback from grateful parents for our staff who spent their Christmas at Pippa’s camp looking after the students.
Comments from parents:
“I would like to thank you and the team for taking care of my daughter over the last 2 weeks. She returned to School safely yesterday and starts her new school term today.
In the first week, she has been focused and spent most of her time on revision – as she will have tests and mocks at the beginning of this school term. She was not particularly “active” back then. Then in the second week, she participated in a number of activities, such as badminton, gym and climbing, and practised her piano in the afternoon. She had had great fun and enjoyed her time there very much.
I must say the camp was very well managed and offered a balanced timetable – revision/ self study in the morning followed by a choice of sports/arts activities in the afternoon. I am very glad that my daughter could maintain a disciplined and healthy routine during her term break.
With the increasing number of confirmed Covid cases in the UK, a few cases in the camp was expected. I was truly impressed by the immediate and decisive actions and measures taken by the management to stop the spread. I couldn’t agree with you more that the children’s safety is the top priority – though I would add that the staff’s safety and wellbeing should be equally important. Your daily updates gave us peace of mind and thank you for being so transparent and open. It was a great relief to hear that there were no new cases in just a few days after the “lockdown” – it proved that the steps taken were effective!
The camp was indeed a success. We could see the amount of efforts and time you all have put in – apparently, there was already a contingency plan in place – so well thought!
My best wishes to all of you. Please take care and stay safe.“
Best regards,
May Chan (Hong Kong Parent)

Due to impact of COVID, I knowing that you have met significant challenges. Thank you so much for offering a perfectly Christmas Camp for children who are unable to go back to home. As parents, we are glad to see Abila has so much funs in the camp. During the conversations with Abila, we can see she is really enjoying the activities, meeting with friends and celebrating Christmas. I appreciated the opportunities your team and you providing such a fantastic Christmas holiday to Abila. I also would like to mention that Eden is so nice, she sends pictures everyday which makes we can know daily activities, and she gives feedback immediately when we are worried about the situation of child. We are aware that there are few positive cases of COVID in the camp, and we would like to thank you for your prompt arrangements to providing such a safe environment.
January arrivals
January Arrivals
Supporting students to return to the UK and continue their UK education remains a priority for Pippa’s Guardians.
Throughout the pandemic we have welcomed arriving students to join our Quarantine Hotel Service when quarantine is a requirement for their entry to the UK. We continued to offer this service for students arriving to the UK in January 2022 following their Christmas holidays, as well as enhanced travel support to assist students with airport covid testing.
As students began to arrive in the UK to start the new term, a Pippa’s representative was waiting at the airport to greet them and provided assistance with the required arrival COVID tests. After transporting everyone to the quarantine hotel and caring for them during their comfortable stay, we arranged safe transport to their onward destination.
Some students simply required safe travel arrangements from the airport to their school, others needed a host family stay or a place to isolate should they test positive.
As always, our Area Managers were on the ground, close to the students to provide individual support and guidance as required.
Pippa's Guardians Christmas Camp 2020.
Christmas is all about children, families and spending special time together creating memories.
With a global pandemic impacting on international travel, Christmas 2020 presented many guardianship organisations with new challenges as we all strived to do the very best for our students.
The goal for Pippa’s Guardians was to provide the best Christmas experience possible for the children who were unable to return home to their families. We were lucky to have the support of our wonderful local host families, but we felt that something extra special was also needed.
The Pippa’s Guardians Christmas Camp was the brainchild of Ben and Louise Hughes who wanted to provide the perfect British ‘family’ Christmas for International students. Their aim was to give students a memorable experience in a Covid-19 safe environment that allowed them the freedom to enjoy a blend of relaxation, study and fun activities. Providing an opportunity to make new friendships and create those special memories was always a high priority.
The beautiful setting of Westonbirt School in Gloucestershire and access to their extensive grounds and facilities, enabled Louise and her dedicated team of Pippa’s staff to deliver an incredible holiday.
Mornings of private study were followed by afternoons offering a huge variety of indoor and outdoor activities, and new experiences. Daily evening entertainment filled the air with laughter and no two days were ever the same. Christmas Day celebrations with the whole Hughes family highlighted how the team had gone above and beyond to deliver the camp to the highest standards. The sparkling fireworks party on New Year’s Eve welcomed 2021 in style.
Keeping the students safe during the Covid-19 pandemic was of the utmost importance. The compulsory pre-camp testing for all students and staff created a safe ‘bubble’ and the rigorous measures that were implemented by the staff for the duration of the camp meant that the children were all free to socialise and enjoy themselves.
The final goodbyes at the end of the camp were emotional. Stories of new friendships made and the glowing feedback received from students and their parents was truly heart-warming. The Hughes family had certainly created special memories for the children who had been in their care.
Our camp represented everything that Pippa’s strives to be as a family guardianship business who embraces every challenge we are faced with. We went above and beyond to keep the children safe and happy. The exceptional efforts of the Pippa’s staff reflect the high quality, personal service that we will continue to deliver in 2021 and beyond.
Activities and New Experiences
The unique camp programme was fun filled, hugely varied and exciting with something for everyone of all ages. We created the perfect balance of structured time to study for important exams or simply to enjoy a good book in beautiful surroundings.
