'Tis the Season....for Mock Exams
'Tis the Season....for Mock Exams
For some students, the festive season is also mock exam season.
But what are mocks for?
Experience
Although mocks don’t carry the same weight as official exams, their value lies in the experience they provide in preparing students for real assessments. By simulating real test conditions, mock exams help students to understand the structure, timing, and pressure of an actual exam environment, which allows students to gauge how well they manage time, stress, and question formats before it truly counts.

Study focus
Beyond practice, mock exams are useful in revealing strengths and weaknesses that might otherwise go unnoticed, giving students and teachers a clear picture of where any improvements might be needed. This can lead to more efficient study plans, helping learners focus on specific skills or topics that require extra attention.

Confidence
Mock examinations are also valuable in building confidence. When students become familiar with the exam process and can see their progress, they often feel more prepared and less anxious on the actual exam day. In this way, mock exams can really help to improve academic performance.

Meet and Greets
Meet and Greets
Our Area Managers love the start of a new school year – they get to meet their new students, introduce them to their new host family, and help them get settled at school.
Anne-Marie, Area Manager for West Sussex, greeted her new Tazaki students at the airport and took them to meet their respective host families. She then made sure they were happily settled in at Christ’s Hospital School, ready for the beginning of term. Here are Rika, Aya and Taiga looking fantastic in their new school unforms.

Area Managers for Shropshire and North Wales, Gilly and Courtenay, recently joined the families of two new Shrewsbury School students, Nemo and Yuzu. The boys will both be staying with the same host family, the Alkureishi family, and so it was one big meet-and-greet getting everyone together!

Area Manager for Somerset, Touche, enjoyed a lovely meet-and-greet with one of her most wonderful host families, the Wills, and the German family of new student, Carolyn. Carolyn’s family also brought their golden retriever all the way from Frankfurt, to meet the Wills and their own pooch! The two dogs got on famously, as did the families. Carolyn has now joined Wells Cathedral School, and as she sings and plays piano, she has been paired up with the perfect host family who are also very musical and can accompany her on the piano whenever she needs to practice!

Kent Area Manager, Sian, introduced Benenden student Sophia to new host family, the Abbotts, who are mid-way through a kitchen renovation! Luckily, it didn’t prevent them from having a lovely first meeting. The Abbotts are new to hosting, but we know they will be brilliant!

His Area Manager, Gilly, was on hand to meet him and introduce him to his new host family, who he stayed with for a week before the start of term. They helped him to get the correct uniform, and showed him around the local area.

It was such a pleasure for Area Manager Elaine to meet student Tommy, who has joined Year 10 at Brighton College this September. Travelling unaccompanied by his parents, and visiting the school for the first time, Tommy handled everything with maturity and calmness. He’s a lovely, polite young man, and Elaine is happy to be supporting him. His new host family, the Sutherlands picked him up from the airport and welcomed him into their home, before Elaine transported him to college for his welcome and introduction, and to help him unpack and settle in.

Half term fun
Half Term Fun
May half term tends to be revision-heavy for a lot students, whether it’s for end of year tests, or more significant exams like GCSEs or A-levels. But we were pleased to hear that despite their academic commitments, many students were able to enjoy the break from school with some fun outings and activities.
Many of our Area Managers also act as host families, and Area Manager for Yorkshire, Belinda, was hosting student Yvonne during her recent half term break from Queen Margaret’s School. Despite being in the middle of her GCSE exams, and having lost of revision to do, Yvonne did take some time out to try her first British pancake for breakfast. It was a definite thumbs-up!

Yvonne was also treated to a Thai meal out to celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival, a traditional Chinese holiday that fell on May 31st this year. At home they also ate the traditional Dragon Boat Festival food: zongzi. Zongzi are sticky rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves, which can have many different fillings, but these consisted of sticky rice and pork. Tradition says you throw the dumplings into the river to commemorate the poet Qu Yuan, but Yvonne and Belinda ate theirs instead!

Kiki, from Padworth School, celebrated her birthday over the half term week. She was staying with her host family at the time, with another student, Aimee, from Headington School. They all enjoyed some birthday cake together and the girls made their host family a lovely Chinese meal. The highlight of their week was a trip to an indoor ski centre for a skiing lesson.

Veronica from Oundle School and Tiffany from Uppingham School were lucky enough to be staying with Area Manager Debs over half term. Debs took the girls to their house in Norfolk for a few days so that they could get a bit of a break from exams and experience a typical British seaside holiday. And we all know that an essential part of a British seaside holiday is definitely crabbing!

Over the half term week Gilly, who is our Area Manager covering Shropshire, met up with two of her students and their mother, Jing. Jing had come to the UK for half term to offer some moral support to daughter, Joanna, who is in the middle of her GCSEs at Shrewsbury School. Area Managers love to meet their students’ families whenever they get the chance, so they all enjoyed a lovely dinner at a Japanese restaurant in Shrewsbury.

Pippa's Annual Conference
Pippa's Annual Conference
Once a year, we trade our home office setups and Teams meetings for face-to-face conversations, countryside views, and real human connection. On Wednesday 7th and Thursday 8th May, our entire team came together at the beautiful Tewkesbury Park Hotel for our annual two-day company conference – and what a fantastic couple of days it was. We spent time reconnecting, reflecting, learning, and looking forward to what’s to come.

Day One
After colleagues had greeted each other, some meeting in person for the first time, Ben Hughes officially kicked off the event with a company update and a look at our future plans. It was inspiring to see how far we’ve come and where we are headed next.
Later in the day, after a delicious lunch and some new team photos, we had a presentation on UKVI and visa processes from Jonathan Hill, followed by a lively Q&A about Chinese culture with our Chinese Liaison Officer Becky Finney, which sparked thoughtful discussion and fresh insights. The day ended on a high with a prosecco reception followed by dinner, giving everyone time to catch up in a more social setting.

Day Two
Thursday gave us the opportunity to break off into smaller groups and rotate around four hands-on workshops covering topics essential to our growth, including how our guardianship service evolves as students get older; how best to network with the schools we work with, and how AI can help us to work smarter.

Ben brought things to a close with a heartfelt wrap-up, followed by the most English of farewells: tea and cake, before hitting the road home.
As always, what made the conference truly special was the sense of togetherness. Whether it was swapping stories over coffee, brainstorming in workshops, or laughing over dinner, it reminded us of the strength in our shared mission.

Supporting Oxford dreams
Pippa’s Area Manager Sarah Garnett played a pivotal role in helping her student, Sora, navigate the challenging university application process, culminating in an offer from Oxford University. Sarah supported Sora in drafting his personal statement and even offered her spare room as a quiet space for his first online Oxford interview.
When it came time for the final in-person interview, Sarah personally drove him there, on hand to calm nerves and offer reassurance. “Being part of Sora’s journey and watching him grow and thrive has been wonderful,” Sarah shared. “I feel fortunate to have played a small part in helping him achieve his dreams.”

Keeping Storm Burt in check
During the chaos of Storm Burt, which impacted the UK in December, Area Manager Touche Hogben stepped in to assist a student stranded alone at Reading train station. The 15-year old’s train connection had been cancelled on a Sunday evening, leaving her with no immediate help. One call to Touche was all it took to set things in motion.
Touche immediately contacted trusted local taxi companies to arrange a safe ride for the 2.5-hour journey back to school. While coordinating plans, she stayed on the phone with the student for nearly an hour, providing reassurance and guiding her to locate the taxi. Thanks to Touche’s quick thinking and dedication, the student reached school safely despite the adverse conditions.
